A top record label exec was arrested Friday after a crowd of hysterical teenyboppers caused a near-riot at a Long Island mall while waiting in line for autographs from a 15-year-old pop sensation, police said.
James Roppo , 44, the senior vice president of sales at Island Def Jam Records , sent out Internet messages to over 3,000 fans that Justin Bieber was signing autographs even after police dispersed the crowd, cops said.

The opening day of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association's girls swimming championship meet in Webster included several highlights for local competitors.
John Jay's Chrisanna Hickey finished in 25th place in Friday's 100-yard butterfly with her time of 1 minute, 0.18 seconds, which set a school record.
The old mark was held by Brooke Davey who came in at 1:01.14 in 1996.

With one swing of his right leg Michael Rivard became a Haddonfield football legend Friday night.
Rivard's 20-yard field goal with 4.9 seconds left gave Haddonfield its biggest win in years as the Bulldawgs knocked West Deptford from the ranks of the unbeaten with a thrilling 15-13 victory in the semifinal round of the South Jersey Group 2 playoffs.

A request by the city of Alexandria's administration to extend a contract for services led to some wrangling over "essential" city jobs.
Some City Council members at their meeting this week questioned the continuance of a professional services agreement with BlueLines LLC of Woodworth by which Shirley Branham, an architect and certified building official, reviews commercial building plans for the city.

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld the California Table Grape Commission's billboard and radio advertising campaigns that tout fresh California grapes as nutritious snacks.
Growers pay $11 million a year to support the work of the Fresno-based commission, which also includes crop research and trade negotiations, officials said.
A group of growers led by Delano Farms sued in 1996, saying they objected to paying for the ads.

There won't be another state title for the defending champion Roosevelt Rough Riders.
After starting the year as the top-ranked team and rallying past Lincoln after a 2-0 deficit to reach Friday's Class AA semifinals, the Riders lost to a team that they had swept twice in the regular season.
